Klare & Tom - Downtown seattle Wedding

No amount of rain could put a damper on this intimate wedding at Ravena Brewing

When Klare and Tom reached out for their downtown Seattle wedding I knew it would be such a unique and fun day. The energy of the city is palpable and always brings unique and authentic moments that you can’t get at another location. Klare and Tom wanted a laid-back day where they were not rushed around but instead got to enjoy the company of their families who came in from across the country to be with them. The rain followed us around most of the day but we managed to stay just one step ahead of it until the ceremony. Keep on reading to see how the rain was celebrated and enhance the story of Klare and Tom’s wedding instead of putting a damper on it.

Getting Ready

Klare and Tom chose to get ready at their home in Bellevue, just across Lake Washington from Seattle, where their wedding venue was located. The house was cheerful and calm as Klare's family helped her do her hair and makeup. Klare and Tom did such a great job of planning that they were not at all rushed and even had time to kick their feet back and enjoy a glass of wine.

Couples Portraits

Once the Klare and Tom were ready we headed across the bridge over to Volunteer Park for their couples and friends and family portraits. It felt like half the city chose to be at the park that day which in hindsight makes sense. It was the first nice spring day we had that year and in true Seattleite fashion, everyone was taking full advantage. If you know, you know. We didn’t let that change any of our plans though. Volunteer Park is very large and there are lots of private areas for us to create in.

The Venue

Klare and Tom wanted a laid-back day and we worked together to craft a timeline that reflected that. There wasn’t a single moment during the day when we were rushing from one location to the next. Once we were done at Volunteer Park we headed to their venue, Ravenna Brewing. We were greeted by all of Klare and Tom’s family and friends and as soon as we got there they said “Did you get rained on?” Fortunately for us, we had just missed it as it was moving north just as we were driving north. The rain finally did catch us with perfect timing minutes after we arrived at the venue.

There is nothing like the spring rain in Seattle. Everything feels fresh and renewed after a spring rain shower and the sun comes out to create a beautiful juxtaposition between the dark wet concrete and the sparkling buildings.

The Ceremony

The old brick building that hosted us was once a garage that has been turned into a brewery and the ceremony utilized the racks of oak barrels as the backdrop. Klare and Tom said their vows in front of their closest friends and family (including some on Zoom). One of their best friends was their officiant and had such a beautiful speech for everyone. I still stand by this after all these years of doing weddings, having someone close to you be your officiant is one of the best decisions you can make.

Reception

Tom kicked off the reception with a cheer and beer started flowing! Continuing with the laid-back vibe the reception followed suit. Family and friends helped move tables and chairs to set up while we were outside signing the wedding certificate. Klare and Tom chose to forgo a first dance and instead made time to spend with each one of their guests. Klare comes from a line of bakers and cake makers and she chose to make her own cake that was actually TWO whole cakes in one. The cutting of the cake was a very impressive event as they separated the cakes so everyone could have a taste.

Sunset Photos

I always try and steal my couples away for sunset portraits during the reception. Tom was having so much fun at the reception that he negotiated the length of time that I was going to pull him away! I convinced him that he only needed to give me 20 minutes and he would be back chatting it up with everyone. We walked around the block and found a beautiful lilac bush that was at least 12 feet high. These are always my favorite photos of the night because it’s a special moment between my couple where the joy of just getting married sets in.

(Film photos above for the nostalgia lovers)

Klare and Tom had an intimate wedding that was perfect for them. They made an active effort to craft moments of intention throughout their day and will live on through the photos for many more lifetimes. I am so honored that I was able to be a part of their day.

Now that I think back to the rain on their wedding day it seems metaphorical, a fresh start and a new chapter opening. So, if it rains on your wedding day. Don’t see it as an unfortunate circumstance. Embrace it. Lean into it. Let it wash things away so you can move into this new chapter renewed and refreshed.
