Downtown Bellevue Surprise Nighttime Proposal - DAN & JENNA

romance in the rain

Surprise proposals are one of the most fun things to plan and execute as a photographer. Partly because I love being a part of such an important moment in a couple’s story and partly because I like to test out my acting and or hiding skills haha! Cue this shoot where I hid in a bush waiting for the perfect moment. It may have been raining but it was still a good time!

You may be wondering how you even plan or pull off something like this. Well, when Dan reached out to let me know what his plan was I couldn’t say no and we communicated and planned via email. First Dan let me know that he wanted to go to dinner and recreate their first date which ended with them walking around the same park. Then we talked about timing and location. I scouted the park for Dan and let him know a few possible locations where there would be adequate lighting, a hiding spot for me, and a good background for the proposal. We settled on a spot in front of the foundation and I sent Dan a map of the route that they would walk to the proposal spot. A challenge we faced was lighting since they were likely to be walking around the park after sunset this made it even more important to be in a particular spot. Once we had our plan it was just a matter of time before the big day!

I’m not going to lie it’s always a little nerve-wracking to capture a proposal, especially one that is at night because I just want to get the perfect shot. But this is why I prepare so much in advance. With all that being said the plan went perfectly and even with a little rain Dan and Jenna’s surprise proposal was perfect!
